PAD 23 - Expressive Drawing

This course, which emphasizes the process of creative expression, will first introduce students to basic techniques and media associated with drawing.  This will be followed by a variety of experimental exercises that that tap into the artist’s emotions and imagination.  Class is suitable for all levels.  (We will be taking a short break for lunch so please feel free to bring food and drink.)


Supply List for Expressive Drawing

pencils – 1 each: 4B, 2B, HB, 2H 

erasers – 1 each: kneaded, art gum, Pink Pearl or plastic eraser

pencil sharpener

paper stump (blending tool)

charcoal – 1 stick vine (can be purchased in packets)

black India ink (for drawing, not mechanical  pens) with pen staff and assorted pen points. (Can be purchased in kit. Make sure for drawing, not lettering)

brush suitable for ink (bamboo handled brush recommended)

small containers for waters (paper or plastic)

cotton rag, paper towels


Pad newsprint

1 sketchbook, approximately 14" x 17" or larger (suitable for a variety of media) 


Bristol pad drawing paper--medium or smooth finish (the larger the better)

graphite paper, 1 sheet ( or this can be made during class using a pencil and one sheet computer paper).

household items for blending such as Qtips, cotton balls, cotton rag


1 stick compressed charcoal

Conte crayon – 1 each: white, brown, black

Any other drawing medium which you are interested in working with. Suggestions include pastels, colored pencil, oil pastels, and colored markers.
