POT 09 - Pottery on the Wheel

Introduction to the potter’s wheel, for beginning and intermediate students. Basic throwing skills will be taught, as well as design and decorative techniques for functional pottery forms.

The tuition includes a $55 fee, which covers the cost of one bag of stoneware, raku, or lizella clay (other clays at additional cost), glazes, and 2,000 cubic inches of glaze firing. Students provide their own tools. Additional clay and tools may be purchased from the studio (credit card only). All work fired at Callanwolde must be produced in the Pottery Program studios (no outside work allowed). Students may access the studios on weekends and most afternoons for practice at no additional cost.

Payment plan available: $75 deposit plus 1 payments of $78.00, paid monthly. Final payment of $77.00.

About the Instructor:  Lora Rust - Since finishing the two-year pottery assistantship at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in 2008, Lora has been a studio potter and pottery instructor in Atlanta, GA. Sharing her love of working in clay, Lora teaches pottery classes at Callanwolde with concentration in the soda firing process, working in porcelain and unique surface techniques.  She also teaches hands-on and demonstration workshops.

About the Instuctor:  Mary Cobb - "I want to create pots that are strong in form and grace, which will be of service and give pleasure through their use." Having learned to make pots at Callanwolde, I earned a pottery assistantship prior to becoming a pottery instructor. With a degree in Art Education, I have teaching experience with the Atlanta Public Schools, a private psychiatric hospital, and recently retired after teaching 23 years at Westminster.

About the Instructor:  Gayatri Baisiwala is a ceramist and figurative sculptor. Her wheel class incorporates learning to throw functional pottery and focuses on surface decorations to create life and texture in pottery.
